Erg Chegaga · The Deep Sahara
The desert keeps better time than we do.
Twelve tented suites on a private erg, two hours past the last paved road. No screens in the tents, no clocks at the table, and a sky so loud with stars you will forget you booked a room.
The tents
Twelve canvas suites, each pitched by hand and struck by hand. No two sit on the same line of the dune.
The Ridge Tent
A canvas suite pitched on the dune crest, with a copper tub and a private deck facing the sunrise.
From $780 / night
Oasis Pavilion
Set beside the spring-fed pool, shaded by date palms, with an outdoor shower open to the sky.
From $940 / night
The Caravanserai
A two-room tent for families or friends, wrapped around a private fire pit and a low majlis lounge.
From $1,340 / night
Star Camp Suite
The farthest tent on the erg, a full kilometre from the mess, for guests who came for the silence.
From $1,120 / night
Between meals
The desert asks nothing of you. These are the ways guests answer anyway, all guided, all optional, none before you have finished your coffee.
Dawn camel line
Ride out before the heat with a Berber guide to a viewpoint no vehicle can reach, and take breakfast on the sand.
Sandboard the great erg
Climb the tallest face on the reserve at golden hour and carve down three hundred metres of soft slope.
Astronomer's table
A resident astronomer sets up a fourteen-inch telescope after dinner and reads the desert sky for you.
Nomad kitchen lesson
Bake bread in the sand under coals and pull a slow tagine with the women of the neighbouring camp.
A hammam cut from the hillside, a table under the stars.
The hammam is carved into the rock behind the camp, where a rhassoul scrub and a slow steam undo the road you took to get here. At dusk the long table is laid on the sand: a fixed menu of what the garden and the nearest souk gave us that morning, cooked over fire, poured with Atlas wine, and finished with mint tea as the last light leaves the dunes.
